I'm not even sure I believe improper annealing is a real thing at this point after how little consensus there seems to be about which coins are/aren't, but if I've ever found one, this is it. Has full mint luster in uncirculated condition, but the coin is dramatically dark on both faces and the rim.

In my opinion.

if the rim is as dark as the faces it's most certainly not an annealing error and it's environmental toning. the planchets are struck after annealing, the reeded edge die obliterates any annealing darkness on the edge in the strike.

I'd also believe the one on the right appears to be Uncirculated and MS still, the edge and contact marks on the darker one on the left leads me to believe it's lightly circulated, maybe would still qualify for low mint state, but lightly circulated nonetheless. there's just far too many contact marks for that coin to not have been out there somewhere for the last 6 months and in and out of people pockets and register tills.

your pictures are a bit too hazy though for a clear view though. some other opinions may differ. based on what I see, there's my opinion.

Hey Big Kingdom, thanks for the reply. The rim is bright but the nickel part is darkened - looks very similar in hand to this coin that Fred Weinberg deemed authentic on the CoinTalk forum https://www.cointalk.com/threads/20...ling.307775/

I'd suggest putting it on that forum and running it by fred over there then. He knows these things well, in fact I'm pretty sure he's the guy they would send it to to verify it a's an annealing error before they slabed it.
