Hello everyone. I am relatively new to ancients. Have some coins soaking, distilled water, some in olive oil. Lots of disappointment, lol. Couple cool coins. I have been a lurker for awhile reading posts and learning. Great info on site. I don't want to ask questions that have been asked time and again. But I had one really crusty coin I wish to share. I soaked and scraped, soaked and scraped. Hard as @$%#!!

Hopefully photos show. I also collect fossils and use an air scribe to prep. So in frustration I grabbed my scribe and it chipped off the concrete encrustation in seconds. I won't lie I nicked the coin acouple times but if I would have used magnification and a little more patience it would have come out better. Now returning to oil to soak. I think if one wasn't overzealous and had a bit more patience this could be a good tool. Your thoughts?

Ouch. I have relatively little experience with cleaning, but have done some gentle picking with a toothpick, followed by some long soaks, with decent results.

Mild electrolysis would be an option for this one.

Well the problem with encrustation is very rarely was it just stuck like concrete to a pure surface. The bronze corrodes and salts grow and encrustation grows. Like a weed it is often rooted into the metal below the ancient surface.
