It's a service medal given by the French government to U.S. Army troops.

Really interesting item! As has been well-put above, not a coin.

Something like this would be of appeal to two very different constituencies: 1) collectors of French medals: the obverse design in particular is an attractive one, a nice standard look for the period (arguably not too far from the 'Sower' figure on French .5, 1, and 2 franc coins). As it was probably awarded to many of our Doughboys, I suspect it's not a highly rare item. It'd be interesting to know just how much silver content it has, assuming it has some, which, given the state of France's finances in 1918 and 1919 (ok heck 1915 for that matter), might be assuming a lot.
2) Collectors of WWI memorabilia, including people with some connection to the Great War. I think these are the people most likely to put a real value on this item, but that is just speculation.
