I am not an expert either but I will give you my insight.
I am not too informed about error coins as there are a wide variety of them, and I find that most of them are had to find.
However, I can answer your material question. Pennies made before 1982 were made with copper. Copper pennies melt value are worth about double (2 cents) their face value. However it is illegal to melt them. You can tell that they are a different material by 1, the year on it, and 2 the darker look. Pre 1982 pennies are also slightly thicker/heavier.
Quarters made before 1965 are made of 90% silver. In the US you can legally melt gold and silver coins if you want to. A pre 1965 quarter that is made of silver will usually sell for $3.5 when melted down.
Silver nickels made between 1942-45 are also made of silver and can sell for around $1 when melted down.
Any authentic gold coins can also be melted down, but they are usually not worth too much more than face value considering that most gold coins are old and usually are already worth $2.5-20
Hope this helps!
