Hi there, Kind of new here.... I just received a batch of Peace dollars from a seller on ebay. They were $10 and I knew I was buying "junk silver". In the name of efficiency, the seller packed the coins in a row on a piece of paper and placed a strip of wide packing tape to hold them down. Like this: What's the best way to clean off the sticky tape residue without damaging the coins too much? Would a simple dip and soak in paint thinner do the trick? I'd hate to destroy the silver content. Thanks! :-) -- Boris

Oh! No, they were $10 each. If they were $10 for all then I wouldn't even care about the residue. I'd rub it off with my thumb. :-)
I'll give them a soak later tonight. All I have is paint thinner so I'll use that. Just wanted to make sure I'm not going to dissolve them and transform them into flat silver discs!

Soak it for 30min, then rinse it for about 2. (with water) I can't believe you got those for 10 each! Time to ebay hunt!

Do I just let them air dry after the rinse? I read that even a soft cotton terry cloth can scratch the surface unnecessarily.
Look for the auctions with fuzzy pictures. Nobody bids on those. :-)

I don't know about that... (the drying process)
but I remember many members here talking about patting them dry...

Don't use paint thinner!
"Paint thinner" could be any number of things, and the formulation could include chemicals which will damage the coins. If you know the exact chemical formulation of the paint thinner, and you know it won't react with the silver, go ahead. Otherwise, another couple of days won't change things - go get some pure acetone (available at Home Depot and the like). Acetone won't react with silver, and will easily remove any adhesive residue.
Just remember, whatever you end up using will be extremely flammable, and will require great care to safely utilize.

Acetone works great for dissolving tape and glue residue but just remember that it is a flammable solvent and should only be used in a well ventilated area away from all ignition sources.

Unfortunately I've had this happen more than once when buying coins on ebay from a non-collector. I've found that freezing the pakage helps keep the adhesive together when the tape is slowly removed.
