I have come across a second Ike dollar from 1972 that does not have a red edge. They both did not have a mint mark.
I know they would have to be San Francisco mints to be silver. Just wondering if any of the Ike dollar collectors have come across similar coins. They almost look 100% nickel with no copper center.
Pictures as requested (I don't have a scale yet, so I can't provide the weight)
Interesting...any thoughts about the streaking on the coin? Was it scrubbed or are the lines raised? I would guess plating too, unless the weight is much different.
I'd have to say plated myself. As far as I know the only non San Francisco mint silver business strike errors known for Ikes are 1974-D and 1977-D. These happened because San Fran sent unsatisfactory Copper-Nickel proof planchets to Denver to be used for business strikes so the planchets wouldn't go to waste. The errors occurred when some silver planchets got mixed in by accident, and the Denver mint employees didn't notice them so they went through the presses. I don't believe San Fran sent any planchets to Philly though, and I believe Denver manufactured the silver planchets for San Fran, so to my knowledge a silver Philly error would be impossible.
