Is laborious and exhausting with so many different varieties on each question it seems massive research has to be undertaken

If the hunt is painful, you shouldn't be doing it. This is suppose to be fun! The more you aquatint yourself to the minting process, the easier it becomes to find errors/varieties.

What Merclover said. Errors and varieties aren't for everyone, especially the minor ones. Lots of collectors and coin roll hunters don't bother with errors and varieties at all, or else restrict their searches/purchases to the major ones. If you really love it, then hunt for everything. If not, just look for what you consider worth while.
