Saw these up for auction on ebay and thought what a waste. These beautiful denarii were turned into trinkets. Unless these are fakes (they don't look it), it is a travesty. I posted a rare Divo Septimius Severus Denarius, which might be worth taking a shot at removing the appendage. However, hey they just might be fakes after all.

I know, some of them are very high grade. I have never seen a loop that was soldered on the actual coin. At least with a bezel, there is a chance that you won't damage the coin at all. My Galba, which I took to a jeweler, who wouldn't touch it. Did it myself, with no damage.

The real question is do we think this is just solder? How would that hold unless there was a drill into the coin itself. And encrustation at all in any of these?

Wow Travelcoin, I asked the seller and she took them all off this bracelet she also has listed. And as you see there are indeed 9 loops where the 9 coins were located. I my humble opinion I think this both speaks to the ability for these to be real and wow, someone wore that? What a thing to wear right?

OK I told the seller about this string as she can use some advice on how to properly deal with these. I asked her to post here if she wants advice. She tells me she sees these are silver soldered on the coins. Maybe we might be kind enough to tell her the ID's and perhaps she might list them correctly but she wants to know how to tell if these are real or not.

Seeing that it's a relatively expensive bracelet, they might very well be authentic. I'm thinking she should have kept the bracelet intact and sent it to an auction house. Louisville, those cracks on the flan are hard to fake, but not impossible would love to see them in hand.

That Caracalla is wicked cool looking and definitely XF.

Travelcoin;

How about if someone sent the lot of the 9 coins off to David Sear, have him give the opinion, and sell them as is with his opinion given, loop and all. How much would the loops detract from the value is the factor to consider. NGC would consider them damaged I imagine and might not slab them at all.

IMHO - I think sold individually they lose value. If left together on the bracelet, they would have been worth more.

The plot thickens, all of the coins on the bracelet were from the Severan Dynasty. This piece of jewellery was high end and the coins were a all XF. The artist who did this had knowledge of Roman Coinage and was able to piece together this dynasty.

However, if it's just solder, it might be worth taking a shot on removing the loop.

Travelcoin,

I think she is taking your advice, and I set her up with a friend at CNG about consignment as a complete piece as she still has the bracelet. Won't hurt to get his opinion.

I don't think it is silver solder
It looks more like lead solder which would be much easier to remove
The problem with using silver solder is it will not fill in gaps in the area to be soldered and thus two flat surfaces need to be placed together and the solder flows into the thin space between
In order to obtain a flat surface on a denarius would require using a file to flatten out both the edge of the coin and the loop
Not good ....
In fact a horrible thing to do to a denarius !
