macmercury Pillar of the Community United States 5822 Posts	Posted 06/12/2021 11:00 pm The coin came in the batch of coins I purchased recently, just a few of copper cents has verdigris and rust, some worst than other, but this 1871 Indian cent is probably hopeless, before the cleaning, it was covered completely in verdigris, so I decided to do test on it. I know don't clean, but in this case I can barley make out that it was a Indian cent, and only see the last digit under magnification. The solution is white vinegar and 50% tap water mixed, after soaking for about 20 minutes, I used an soft bristle brush to brush the entire surface off of contaminate, decided not to soak any longer, those verdigris are pretty much etched into the copper, rinse with tap water, and dipped into acetone for 15 seconds. I forget who,but a member posted a polarity chart on cleaning methods that should be used if and only if you need to clean coins.. sel_69l Bedrock of the Community Australia 21786 Posts	Posted 06/13/2021 06:22 am Cleaning method OK to reveal the date, but not good enough to passivate the bronze disease. Search Google to learn a variation on the method on how to passivate bronze disease (verdigris), that suits the needs of this coin. Until BD is brought under control, keep this coin isolated from the rest of your collection. Note : From appearance in the pics, BD has already caused pitting. Nevertheless, still worth doing if for only learning how to passivate BD. which may come in helpful in saving some other coin in the future. Report this Post to the Staff

But if you couldn't tell much of anything before , I think the cleaned coin looks pretty darn good . The coin is a goner but at least now you can use it as a hole filler . And from the start I know the BD has dug into the coin already, so just trying to see the rest of the date, stopped as soon as I see the complete date, but not good enough to get the rest of it out.
