Spanish Countermarked Cob - 8 Maravedis?

There was the Franco-Spanish war (1635-1659), the Portuguese Restoration war (1640-1668) and the Guerra dels Segadors (1640-1659) on Catalonia. This wars leaded to a difficult monetary situation, so Felipe IV decided to countermark all hammered VIII maravedís to VIII, opposite to milled coinage from Segovia mint, where the VIII maravedís were countermarked to XII. It is a common countermark, but there should be any mintmark under the value, between the two dots. I've never seen any countermark without the mintmark. Host coin is a Felipe IV VIII maravedís from Granada mint, you can see the mint mark (G) next to the castle. It should be 1623, 1625, or 1626 Regards! Report this Post to the Staff
