I received a treasure trove of coins from my mother that my dad had accumulated over the years. You can read all about that in the "Noob asking the group" thread in the US coins forums. Anyways, when I was almost done she informed me that she found a box of foreign coins. 95% of them were Canadian. There was a few, Swiss a handful of Mexican, etc. There are about 12 coins that I was hoping youse would be able to identify and give me an approximate value. Don't worry, I won't post all 12 at once. First up, I believe this is an 1880 gold ½ sovereign. It doesn't look gold to me that's why I'm not sure. Yes, I realize it has a hole in it that shouldn't be there.

Maybe a beat-up half crown? Knowing the diameter would help for sure.

I believe you are correct, aiglet! It is 32mm in diameter. Thanks. This is why this is the best place to ask questions! Today's specimen is 24mm Edited post because I posted the wrong pictures

Dan Please start a new post for each coin under the appropriate forum. It can get confusing with more than one coin on the same thread.

Thanks. I thought it was a Chinese coin. How can one tell what year it is?

Dan, I would highly recommend you install the app Coinoscope on your phone. It has a very good success rate for coin identification, especially coins from the last 100 years. Would also recommend the website Creounity for calculating dates on coins such as the Japanese coin you posted.
