Hello, I found this article about coin doctoring and now I am worried about artificially toned gold coins:

https://coinweek.com/opinion/commen...eat-coins-2/

I have read that among other substances, iodine has often been used to artificially make a gold coin look old & crusty.

Now I have some questions:

1. I am wondering now: how can real old, dirty gold be distinguished from these doctored coins? And is this coin doctoring only a rare occurance on (rare) US coins or a widespread problem affecting all kinds of historic gold coins?

2. Here are several examples of different looking old gold coins I could find on the internet. Do you think they look authentic or doctored?

Interesting article.

I would only comment that the color of the U.S. $5 coin looks abnormal, and that the last coin looks like it was dirty and underwent a partial cleaning at some time in the past (i.e. nothing nefarious going on).

I have only a small number of gold coins in my collection, mostly far older than these, and all look like I expect gold to look (i.e. gold colored, with no toning, except for one which I think is less pure, maybe 50-60%).
