Other than abrasion marks from rubbing with a rough cloth, what are the tell tale signs? Is it something that you can only see when looking at the surface through a loupe or microscope?

Boris,

Do a thread search at the top of the page. Just type in cleaned or cleaning. This has been discussed quite a bit here and many of the threads have pictures. Seeing evidence of cleaning is the best way to recognize it.

As already noted. Probably should be a sticky or some type of permanent post. Cleaned, cleaning, dipping of coins is one of the most discussed subjects.

Even more, I would like to see some type of "cleaning scale" from 0 to 9 maybe with 0 being " undistinguishable", 3-4 " I know it happened but it passed PCGS/NGC/ANACs, 9 " used wire brush and mototool, scratches visible from 3 ft."
The last 7,8,9 could include degrees of permanent visible damage.

Right now, cleaning includes all stages, and yet probably more collector coins have been "cleaned" to one degree or another than have not. IMO.Some forum members realize this ( like Dave and Carl ) and others don't. It take education and experience. A sticky of different threads and links would be good.
