I was looking at some coins today and noticed the edge inscription is different on both coins. Both coins are 1988.

Is this variation standard for these dollar coins? Any info will be appreciated.

If you are talking about the orientation of the lettering, that is common for many (most?) circulation coins with edge lettering. The lettering is added after the initial strike and there is no control of the orientation of the coin between the strikes.

If you are talking about a different difference please describe it.

It is a 50 -50 chance as to what side is up as it is a different operation to add the edge lettering.
The Mint doesn't really regulate which side is up when the lettering is applied.
