Dear all,

My father has a coin box with 3 ancient coins, we suppose they are from Andorra because in the coin box there is the coat of arms from Andorra.

We would like to know what coins they are and if they are legit.

Coin 3:
diameter: about 2 cm
weight: about 3.5g

I'll post the other coins in a separate post. Thank you very much for your help!

@bujub, coins 2 and 3 look like medieval deniers (pennies) from feudal France, but the size is a bit large and the weight is much too high.

There are others here who are more knowledgeable in these areas who will identify them.

Well, the type is County of Melgueil, so French Feudal, dating uncertain but maybe 1100-1200, like this denier:

But, the weight is crazy off, it should be at most a little more than 1 g! And they didn't make any larger coins with the same design, so I don't really know about this one, it is suspicious.

@erafiel do you have an idea why in Andorra they would put these 3 coins together? A denier from County of Melgueil, a denaro of Alfonso II of Aragon and a gold florin?

I asked my father again and he remembered now that he was on a diplomatic visit in Andorra like 40 years ago and it was a present from the government of Andorra. I would like to understand why they choose this present and this combination of coins?

Andorra was co-ruled by French/Navarrese and Spanish rulers during the Middle Ages. I'm not sure if it had coinage of its own, but it certainly also used the coins of neighboring areas, like Languedoc (where the County of Melgueil was located) and Barcelona (Alfonso II of Aragon was also Count of Barcelona). Florins like the one you have were minted in Barcelona, and being trade coins they could show up just anywhere. So these three coins may well represent what circulated in Andorra back in those days.
