I just joined this coin forum and I'm excited to learn from everyone!

I have an 1865 2 cent piece that has a rotated die. Its almost a complete 180 degree rotation. Has anyone seen this before? What kind of value does this extreme type of rotated die error add to the coin? I included pics and a video of me flipping the coin from different angles so you can see how severe the die is rotated, and the general condition of the coin.

Thanks in advance for any help!

to the CCF!

The coin is a rotated die with almost a Medallic Alignment instead of the normal Coin Alignment that it should have.

I have seen this before on the Two Cent series coins. While it may make a slight difference in the value, this coin's condition will limit that value.

It's an interesting error coin and worthy of a 2x2. You might check ebay https://www.ebay.com/sch/Coins-Pape...e=1&_fosrp=1 for sold coin values on Medallic Alignment or 180° Rotation, but factor in the condition.

Nice error, thanks for posting!

Check ebay sold values for an idea on current values.

I disagree with the above advice a little. According to the Rotated Die census, rotated 1865 Two Cent Pieces are given an R5 rating, meaning that only 31-80 two-cent pieces from 1865 are believed to exist that have rotated dies from 90 to 180 degrees. We are used to seeing Two Cent Pieces from 1864 with rotated dies - that might be the most common date of any denomination with significantly rotated dies - it comes in at an R1, meaning over 1K rotated specimens are believed to exist. Unfortunately for you, very few people collect rotated dies. Still, I'd add $20 to the value of your coin for the rotation, although if you listed it on ebay, it would probably sit for half a year before someone bit.

Unless you put a smaller than that price like $15 above. Then you would get buyers way faster.
