Glare And Brightness Of A Coin

Use lots of diffusion
Use Aperture Priority mode
Adjust exposure compensation to -1EV
Use Neutral or Faithful Style setting
Set the Contrast in the Style subsettings to -4
Make sure the white "zoom" box in Live View is over the brightest area of the coin

The resulting image from above will almost certainly appear under-exposed as it will be overall too dark, but the highlights will not be over-exposed. In DPP or Photoshop or whatever, adjust the tone curve to lighten the shadows and midtones without lightening the highlights.

If you want help with the adjustments, post an image taken with the above settings but without any post processing, and I'll show you how to adjust the image using DPP.

Also, only use one type of light source. If you use multiple types, you will never be able to properly white balance the camera, and your images will all be off-color.

Thanks mpsrpms. Actuallbforgot about this post. Ok I will try it and see how turns out. For editing you photos what program do you use. I actually just looked and using windows photo editing. I guess that was already on the laptop and don't pay much mind. You mentioned adjusting the tone curve and that option is not on this picture editor. Actually I can't even resize my photos.

Ok that's what I got when I downloaded the software from Cannon. Ok I should be squared away there. Hope today I have time to shoot. I will do shoots for copper, clad, and then silver. I think I got my dark room as good as it's gonna get. I found a LED light with a clip on the end, but I think and hope it has a light adjustment to dim or brighten. Thanks for your help again. Feel like I owe you for the help.

I took pictures of a brown and red penny, then a Roosevelt clad dime improperly annealed, and a silver Mercury. I will post them here in couple hours.

ok that is a red/brown, brown, silver, and silver proof with your suggested settings. Sorry bout all the pics. I was having fun. All with day light from window. Night shoot was easy also with led light. I think they look good. Adjust the tone a tad, or brightness and should be in business. See what you think.

White balance huh! I have been adjusting tone like Rpmsrpms said, just haven't posted yet. I have a no FG Kennedy I want to post to see if y'all think it's legit. So with Rpmsrpms request I posted these with the adjustment info he gave me so he can tighten the lid on the jar. I do have contrast at -4 like he said tone is kind of difficult to adjust raster then adjusting contrast or saturation. I got them looking like real coins instead of a cartoon now. That's got me excited now. I'm shooting today after I get off work and will try we. You got my proof looking perfect
