Let me start by saying I have really liked some coins in the past. I have a Trade dollar I really like. I've caught myself looking at a Peace dollar more than once. Heck, I even found a Hu-Peh Province Ten Cash coin catching my fancy, but it wasn't until last night that I fell in love. It was as I was going through my latest procurement that I met her. From the back she was nothing special But when she turned around I don't know if any of you have ever felt this way before, but now I know why poets write poems, and why man painted on a wall, why all those sappy songs were written ... because I am in love.

An artistic masterpiece, depicted on a common silver coin.
I you have been collecting American coins, you may have already been primed to appreciate the 1 Franc pictured.
Some of the inspiration is provided by Oscar Roty, for way Liberty appears on American gold and silver coins.

I like those as well. As sel said, it ought to make you think about some favorite US coin designs.
Oscar Roty's La Semeuse has shown up on several types of coins since its debut on French coinage. With the ones I know of, you could assemble a type set around the theme without breaking the bank, even with uncirculated examples. The challenge would be finding good examples as opposed to the funds to buy them. That might be a fun, guilt-free project.

Quote: An artistic masterpiece completely. The French seem to agree too, this design was used on coins (50 c, 1 fr, 2 fr, 5 fr) from 1897 to 2001 (with a break 1921-59), so for more than a 100 years! With France being my primary collection area, I have a few of these beauties of course . Here are the first and last ones, La Semeuse hasn't aged a day in 104 years ...

A silver 5 5rancs circulated in France, up until the mid 1970's. I can remember spending them from pocket change, when I was in France in 1970, and again in 1971.

I'm not really a foreign coin collector, but I have always appreciated the beauty and artistry of many of the French coin designs. I put aside quite a few during my years living in Europe, and picked up some of the French pre-Euro proof sets while there. As far as truly falling in love with a coin design, though, for me it was the 1839 British 5 pound gold proof with the Una and the Lion reverse. When I first saw an example of that coin decades ago, I was absolutely in awe. Unlike many of the beautiful French coins, however, the 1839 proof will be something I'll just have to admire from afar due to the extravagant prices they command!
