Well heres the local legend of my area I have been researching, Its kind of a neat story thought i'd share it. The story begins in the late 1800 in the ozark mountains ,where lived a mountain man named John(last name left out because relatives still live in my town)Through a series of events he came to have trouble with some african american folks that lived in a near by town. One day while in town John got into a argument with one of the people and killed him in the middle of main street with everybody there to see. With the law now on his tail he fled U.S to alberta Canada where he squated on a piece of land just outside of my home town on the athabasca river. A U.S marshall named pete never stopped following John wanting to return him to the states.Pete eventually caught john and killed him in a scuffel never returning to USA. Pete built a cabin and lived out his days there until he was found dead of a heart attack at his table. This is where the story gets interesting, pete was known to have paid for everything in town with gold that he mined from the athabasca river it was also said that he carried a gold nugget the size of his fist and two side arm guns from his days as a marshell. when they found him dead he was missing one of his guns and the gold nugget, the rest of the story confirmed by his surviving dauhter is that he knew he was going to die and before he did he hid his gold then set his gun up to shoot who ever finds it. Thats it, neat hey. come summer I plan on metal detecting for the gun starting by the rings left by his cabin I can't wait. Sorry for the long post

Be careful and good hunting. You may just be chasing an old yarn spun up by the locals, but if you don't go after you will never find it. Post some if you find anything. I am going detecting at the site of an old Brothel/Hotel/Illegal gambling house today. A lot of old stories circulate about buried jars of cash out there, although none have been known to be found there. On the other hand very few people here have a metal detector. Most of the Civil War artifacts that litter the ground in my area have been found by a group of 7 people one of which is my neighbor. He tells me that it has not been searched by that group has far as he knows. So I to will chase the tales told by the old folks. Who knows what if anything I will find. I also have a backup plan A very small town a few miles away from the site has a branch of my bank there. A lot of older folks live there. Gonna go get me some rolls they have brought to search thru later. Gotta find something between the 2 places.

Ya, you could be right there. The thrill of the hunt is still there though. Also some of the story has been 100% varified. Payment records from the fairy company that took people across the river showed paid in gold dust. His daughter who is in her 90 s still has the remaining gun. And the best part she claims to have played with the nugget as a child. Gives me gold fever!!. Your spot sounds like a dream spot..drunk gamblers losing all there money I read stories of people detecting under ghost town store sidewalks and finding amazing stuff sounds like a blast.

just be sure you look for the gun first. you don't want to be digging up a huge gold nugget and see it and reach down and pick it up and get lead poisoning
