Came across a 1978 Washington quarter that, first off, sounds like a silver coin. I don't believe it is silver, it would weigh more I believe. Then I weighed it it only weighed 5.29g. That a bit over .4g underweight. Is that due to wear? Or possible different planchet? Anyone out there with more knowledge any info would be appreciated.
. 5.67 would be normal and there is a mint tolerance of +/- .19 . 14th post down http://goccf.com/t/251134#2113155 Photos might help.Front back edge. John1
On a non-precious metal coin the weight is not that critical. It is only .2 out from the nominal desired weight and depending on the condition of the coin, it may be ok. Like OFM said it may have started out as an under weight planchet.
Thank you all for your replies. So, if it is a underweight planchet, would that change the tone or sound of this coin so dramatically? I'll add some photos later and that may help. Thanks again all
