Unknown Damage To 1 Cent Coin

A mate gave me 5Ks of 1 & 2 cent pieces. Among them I found this one. My first thought was that the damage was road damage, however taking another look, the damage is consistent and there is very little damage to the rim.
Has anyone seen this sort of damage before?
