That article is 6 years old. Not quite sure why the fresh 'outrage.' These coins have an international following and demand, hence the decision for PCGS to grade them was made almost 10 years ago.

It's been awhile since I updated this, but seemed like a good time to do it. Here are some numbers on the hoard. Not much has changed in terms of coins graded, except 1914 $10 at NGC, went up by around a thousand over last 7 years. If anyone has an ICCS population report, I would be interested in updating with those numbers for hoard graded. But don't see them very often in ICCS, so probably small.

Tripoli YOU make this dramatic by calling it outrage! I am not outraged or even upset at all. I call it asking a simple question...which popped into my mind when I read this article a few days ago and because just maybe I do not know and would like to know? DO YOU know the answer to why there was no Canadian TPG involved? I assume, one was not even consulted on this?

Maybe the Mint employee that did a Google search in 2010, could not find a website for Canadian grading company with long history of market acceptance? My guess would be they were influenced by the two dealers.
Would it really add value to the mint to pay 30,000 x $6+ to grade them. I don't like the smell of the deal the dealers got, assuming there was one. But was happy to BOC was able to get a premium on some of the gold. Mixed feelings on melting.

47P7 the 3 exclamation points at the end of your sentence conveyed significant emotion, so I can see where tripoli came up with the outrage comment. You capitalized NOT as well. There was a lot of emphasis in that sentence. That being said, Sandy Campbell is the main reason why most of the Canadian Gold Hoard was sent to PCGS for grading. They are much more widely recognized world wide than any Canadian TPG and they slab coins. ICCS flips are pretty awful for high value coins that you would like protected, especially anything larger. PCGS slabs are great. So why wouldn't you send them to PCGS? They will sell way better in the US in PCGS slabs for sure. PCGS really grades Canadian coins poorly in the mid grades, but once you are up in MS grades they are quite good at grading. They look at things a little differently still, but honestly I prefer PCGS over ICCS. All of my gold Canadian coins are either in PCGS slabs now or still raw.

Tripoli and Levaril
I collect Canadian coins since 1967. I simply asked some questions about Canadian coins. and I am fully aware and do know of Sandy Campbell. Actually met and dealt with him more than once and gotten advice from him a few times about some Canadian Rarities I did and some I still own.
And Levarill. it does not matter what you collect.. it has nothing to do with my post. Nothing. So, everyone, just consider I never asked anything in my first post. simply forget it. Tripoli Oh, btw, this gold hoard issue was raised again recently in an international coin publication....just so you know.

Why? Because Ian Laing and Sandy Campbell wanted to, that's why. They bought the coins raw, just like everybody else - I suspect they made a deal with the RCM for a bulk purchase, and why not, Ian Laing is one of the RCM's biggest customers of numismatic product. I am sure there is actually more of a back story to this, involving Brian Cornwall, Sandy Campbell and perhaps others, but we'll never know. The point is moot, because the RCM never sent any coins to any grading company. For the record, I have seen lots of gold hoard coins in ICCS flips at Toronto Coin shows...I have seen some in NGC holders and a few in CCCS holders.
