I've never used one. Looking at the design, I suspect they'd be effective, but would wash out any luster on the coin. So what you'd get, instead of something like this:

....is something like this:

Luster usually requires pretty direct lighting to manifest itself in a pic.

Use them as a background in combination with the same lighting you use, you still pick up the luster and the unsightly shadows go away.
