I posted this sometime ago in the lowball thread, but wondering if anybody else have ever seen one of these this low of grade, PO-01. I found this in a dealers junk box of foreign silver coins as an oopsie. I could barely make out a date of 1979-P. Jbuck will remember this Edited by mrwhatisit 08/26/2021 5:56 pm

Nice (as sarcastically as possible) coin! Low ball collectors would probably pay good money for that (bad) coin!

intentionally modified, but it does give an idea of what an SBA would look like after a century or two of active circulation

Show me any 1979/80 coin in a major TPG PO-01 holder.

Quote: Just a total fake. I believe the implication is you believe this was 'manufactured' somehow and not the result of natural wear. While I agree that it did not circulate in commerce to this point, how can we be sure it was not a long term pocket piece? Is there any diagnostic to know the difference? As an ex-lowball collector I'm impressed.

I can only guess , if it was a pocket piece since 1979 to present day , it is very possible it could have worn down that much .

Clad coins do not wear as fast as the softer pre-1965 silver alloy had. Maybe if you put sand it your pockets and ran a marathon weekly, you could wear an SBA down to match this example after 40 years. It's much easier, and therefore much more likely, someone used a machine to grind or sand this coin, then smoothed whatever machining marks remained.

Intentionally aged. These just did not circulate as people thought it was too much like a quarter.
