As stated elsewhere, I too dislike the parks quarter idea. I do however like the short series changes such as Westward Journey and the Lincoln Cent changes this year. They are short, to the point and the usher in a permanent design change. They can be thought of as ending an old series or starting a new one or part of a long running series (different people have different views on this). Fatcat

Greed, Money, Capitolism, Manifest Destiny, Power, Self Indulgence, Self Empowerment, Self Gratification, Mismanagement of affairs of the common man........these are some of the reasons we have the Congress that we have who decides these things. What makes them happy and can make them money are the two leading factors......geniune coin collectors will just have to "muddle through" and collect what they deem worthy along the way !

More often than not our elected representatives only represent their own interests, not those of their constituency as a whole.

Quote: How can they be called coins when they don't circulate and are just bullion items If it is monetized with a denomination, then it is a coin. Without a denomination, it is just a medal or bullion round. Quote: Congress sees the mint as a way to suck more money out of the public, more money = more power. Also the prestige of being able to have something for posterity, like Ted Kennedy getting a commemorative for his sister and when he kicks off we'll be able to buy a commemorative of him too. The coin was for a good cause but Eunice is an ugly cuss, isn't she Unfortunately, some members of Congress have recently learned that the US Mint actually makes a profit through seigniorage and numismatic sales so they are trying to milk it for all its worth at the expense of coin collectors and eventually to the detriment of the hobby

Well Christian, I couldn't disagree more. I love the new Lincoln designs and I'm looking forward to the National Park Series. Its great to see the mint employ a team of artist and create new reverses several time a year. It help keep the coinage fresh and current.
Keep them coming Mr. Moy.
No one ever said that you had to collect everything. If it's not for you don't collect it...that's easier than complaining to your cronies but not as fun ....hahahaha. The DC quarter comes out on Friday ! Yippppeeeeeee.
No matter what the Mint does or doesn't do, it seems that are never a shortage of complainers.

I don't mind hearing some healthy debate on reasons why we do or do not collect particular coins. We all have opinions; that makes the hobby interesting. The way I see it, every coin design originated as art, which is always fair game for critique. Coins and art have been criticized for centuries. In fact, one of my favorite US coins, the Flying Eagle cent, was described as a "flying dinner napkin" upon its release.

From one extreme to the other!
When I started collecting in the 1950's, there were only the usual circulating coins to collect. Period. Now, the Government has discovered it has a real cash cow to feed off of, and the different designs will just keep coming, and coming, and...

I think it's great.
There are products to fit everyone's budget unless you have zero dollars. And, don't forget, with so many products there are more opportunities for errors and varities.
It's numismatics, and I embrace the bounty, even as I try to discriminate using my own personal idea of what is trash and what is treasure.

I think the mint is doing what it does best, flooding the market with useless products. At least they rid themselves of the State Quarter Spoons.

Overboard is an understatement. It makes them money, so they'll keep on doing it.
