It confuses me, how certain people get collectables coins like this at markups, then dump them into circulation to get beaten up like this.

2017 New Caledonia 50 francs (mintage 384,000)

I thought it must have been an older coin but it is actually the last year these coins were minted.

Yep, seawater does that. Probably fell between the fuel tanks in the stern and sat in the bilge water for a year or two until the boat was cleaned.
