Sometimes medieval heraldry comes together in strange ways ...

In 1352, Johanna (Jeanne in French), heiress to the throne of Brabant-Limburg married Wenceslas of Bohemia, 14 years her junior , who two years later became the first duke of Luxembourg.
In 1355 Johanna's father, Jean III, died, and she inherited the throne of Brabant-Limburg, ruling with Wenceslas as consort. Their arms featured (count 'em!) FOUR different rampant lions!

In the coin shown below (copyright Fritz Kunker, downloaded from acsearch), from the upper left clockwise are the lion of Bohemia with its braided tail, then Brabant, Limbourg, and Luxembourg on a background of horizonta bars.

Makes me think of a synchronized dance team ...

It does give a slightly odd impression - I think this shows you can have too many lions in your coat of arms! But it's a beautiful coin.

..or maybe a circus act!

There are a lot of coins with 4 lions from Duchy of Brabant, but only in this reign is it four different lions. I wish I had a coin like that gorgeous Pieter d'Or in my collection, but I do have a smaller silver type with this shield.
