I am expanding my collection and adding early commemoratives. I have bought a few already (Grant, Lincoln, Pilgrim, Monroe Doctrine), all raw. I keep seeing posts about counterfeits, since I probably cannot tell the difference with well done counterfeits, should I only buy slabbed? Are they that prevalent? Should I have the ones I have checked out?

Counterfeits can occur in all series of US coins, but my experience is that they are much less frequent with US classic commemorative Half Dollars.
However, almost all fakes of this series are made to deceive coin collectors, (numismatic fakes, not fakes made for wide scale circulation), and thus the fake has to be made to a high level of deception.

I think the reason for this is that the counterfeiter has to have his fakes accepted by as many victims as possible, and most Americans are not all that familiar with individual coin designs within the US Half Dollar commemorative series.

If you have any doubts, post pictures of them on this Forum, or take to a professional coin dealer for his opinion.

While there exists a counterfeit version of every classic US commemorative coin, they are not encountered with great frequency. And, many of the fakes that are seen, are poorly executed and easy to detect with even a rudimentary knowledge of the genuine design.

For example:

Genuine 1937 Roanoke Colony Memorial Half Dollar

Have a look at the original post I did about this counterfeit: 1937 Roanoke Half Dollar Copy

This isn't to say that there aren't some very high-quality counterfeits out there - because there are - but most of what is encountered today are easily-detectable, poorly-executed overseas fakes.

If you are willing to put in a little time to become familiar with all of the classic commemorative coin designs, and are comfortable with your grading skills, I don't think you need to stop buying raw coins. My first set of commemorative coins was a raw set. I eventually transitioned into a slab set as I pursued higher grade pieces, but I still recall my first set fondly!

Post images of each here (in separate threads) and, as long as the images are clear and bright (i.e., all bets are off with dark and/or blurry images), the experienced collectors here should be be able to assess them.

this is fake, correct?

Before I comment, what on the coin made you come to that conclusion?

Even though that is probably the ,most counterfeited of the
