If an 1855 trime, for example, appears to display an 855/885 matching the NGC-only VP-001 variety, would PCGS refuse to perform a variety check since similar varieties do not exist in CoinFacts?

Has PCGS ever stamped an NGC variety # on a PCGS slab especially if it was a crossover or even a brand new PCGS slab matching a NGC variety which is not in CoinFacts ?

I ask these questions to avoid sending PCGS a coin fitting these criteria until I have some further clarity on the matter.

I usually never bother checking NGC VarietyPlus if CoinFacts does not have anything but for some unknown reason I did and the doubling is clear as day.

I also would not bother ripping it out of its Mylar holder to lift the black gunk blocking the 'possible' doubling with no supporting evidence: especially when preparing for a coin show with very few days left before it starts.

I forgot to mention one last point. To some people clashes are a distraction. But I personally love them.

And this jewel also displays a reverse die clash which clearly shows the tilted lines of the shield of the other side.

It even shows segments of the star's outline which are a bit harder to capture.

It's a two for one twofer that I think could be very valuable. I just cannot find any post sale auction results for this unique NGC-recognized variety.

Any suggestions on where to find something would be welcome. Heritage does not have one either.

I've been looking at some photos.
Is it a variety if they all are the same ? https://www.PCGS.com/coinfacts/coin/1855-3cs/3671

I have seen this RPD quite often and have also wondered why PCGS seemingly does not recognize this pretty obvious variety. The 1855 is the least common date in the series until you get into the later dates (1863 on). Because of this it's value lies heavily in the year itself and perhaps only a small premium added with the RPD.

As far as the clashing goes, it is quite common in the series.

If you are looking to have it slabbed, I would suggest looking into ANACS as they would be more likely to attribute the variety and also the clashing on the label.

Did some digging and it appears PCGS will, or at least did at one point, attribute it as a "minor variety". Some more info in the Heritage description as well.

Thanks apco,

Even after doing a thorough check I had previously written off Heritage as a source for a completed auction for this trime.

When things get too busy, important double-checking can unintentionally lead to a costly mistake: at least in the case of this variety.

I feel like I owe you a finder's fee when I sell this thing.
