Hi.
I recently inherited some coins from my father who passed in May. I want to keep them safe and pristine. My house is very cold and damp. I have placed a bunch of silica gel packets with the coins but they almost immediately turned color, indicating absorption of moisture. Is there a box or something made that controls outside humidity?
Also...I would appreciate any tips on how and where to sell some of these coins to reputable, trustworthy people who will give me fair pricing. Thank you for your help! I'm looking forward to learning from your collective wisdom.
Rest in Peace

To CCF , you need to keep your coins away from the dampness . Start with putting any uncirculated ones in air-tite holders . You can buy them from any coin supply store . Use cardboard boxes , wood or PVC Free plastic boxes to store them . The more protection the better against the elements .
As far as where to sell I would have to say e-Bay but bear in mind their fees & postage plus PayPal fees . Do not sell to coin dealers ; You will not get much from them ,they buy and resell .

If it's a fairly small space, I found that the perforated metal canisters of silica beads made for gun safes work pretty well; when the beads turn pink you heat it in the the oven for a few hours to dry it out. The larger ones are about the size of a coffee can. However, if your house has very high humidity you may have to dry them fairly often.

I personally use an electric small room dehumidifier with a tank you simply dump when full. Depending on the time of the year, I have to dump the tank anywhere from once a week to once a month.
