I have multiple French 5 Franc coins (KM#926a.1). However, I noticed that sometime between 1973 and 1987 the design was slightly changed. The markings on the reverse above FRANCS and either side of the 5 changed direction. Does anyone know if this is true for all coins of catalog number KM#926a.1, and if so, what date did this change occur? Shouldn't there be a new catalog number because of this difference? Thanks!

Hi Mongo:

The change in marks you mention is in fact merely a change of privy marks. This means that the owl mark changed to a dolphin, which then changed to a bee. The last privy mark on the last 5 franc piece--2001--is a horseshoe.
The privy marks are the personal stamp of the chief engraver at the Paris mint (the Paris mint is indicated by the cornucopia symbol, always to the left of the 5). Owl = Raymond Joly, dolphin = Emile Rousseau, Bee = Pierre Rodier, etc... The changes in privy mark do not represent a change in coin type, and do not result in a new catalog number.
The mint marks and privy marks are generally much more interesting to look at on francs from the 19th century, simply because there are many many mints at play and thus an interesting variety of personal symbols to discover.

Happy Franc hunting!
