Grading can be...tough. So I was at my LCS and I seen a PCGS slabbed Morgan. I didnt see the grade yet and guessed it was high AU. The fields were discolored like circulated Morgans look, the cheek was discolored as well and also looked rubbed. It wasn't a New Orleans or poor strike.

It graded MS63!

I've made progress in my grading but after this doozy I need some help.

Any pointers on grading Morgans?

Thanks

p.s. I don't have any pictures

There's a wealth of information out there regarding this subject. Start with The Comprehensive Catalogue and Encyclopedia of US Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars, FCI Press. Also The United States coins MegaRed 7th Edition came out recently, with expanded coverage of dollar coins.
As far as the grading goes, you have to consider the Morgans had a hard life. If they weren't circulated, they spent decades rubbing together in bank bags. That's why they might appear AU with all the chafe marks, but they are still MS coins.
