The old man came across a pair of aUNC $100 notes that he claims are "test notes" from 1996 according to some book information. I've checked out the RBA site and the serial number ranges are a little confusing.

http://www.rba.gov.au/CurrencyNotes...fo.html#1996

They say:

*AN96-CS96 Serial range 999999 - 648001.
*Test notes issued for trial of static free substrate (prefixes used were AN to AZ, BN to BZ and CN to CS).

I suspect they just have the range backwards and it means any of those prefixes with serials ABOVE 648001 to 999999?

The two notes are serialed BZ96 687296 and CO96 667590 so would appear to be test notes. Only problem is one has an ink stamp in purple on it of "LPR41" - I'm guessing that's not put on their by the RBA :-) so it would be classed as damaged. The other has been signed in biro, sadly not by anyone famous LOL.

Overall despite being aUNC test notes I'm guessing the collectibility factor and therefore value of these notes would be pretty poor but wondered what others thought.

Thanks
LT.

I would say don't be in too much of a hurry to write them off as not valuable. You are probably looking at values of around $600 each or higher, despite the stamp and biro. These notes are very hard to get, and very, very hard to get in high grades. Just a guess, but the "LPR41" may have been put there by Note printing Australia, LPR often meaning Limited Print Run.

And notes are numbered backwards from 999999, so the info on their site is correct, in regard to the serial number range.

Hopefully someone will be able to pitch in a bit more info for you.

Nice pick up my friend!

The BZ96 note is a highly collectable note as is the AZ, BN, & CN. These first/last prefix notes seldom come up for sale. The AN (first) & CS (last) can be bought of ebay quite readily.

Latman100 is spot on with his info. The LPR41 overprint is extremely collectable in the "test note" series including the $5 notes which were issued the same way in 1997. I would suggest you put it away for "a rainy day". If you ever want to sell it, let me know.....LOL.

Sadly, the note with the ink/pen mark on it detracts from any value substantially even if it is in pristine condition.

Thanks guys it sounds like all his sifting through change and note withdrawals from the bank may have somewhat paid off :)

If we were interested in getting a proper valuation done can anyone recommend a dealer in Brisbane/Ipswich or similar? Failing that we could email scans to an interstate dealer and get an idea of value from them? Would there typically be a charge for getting a ballpark valuation done in this way?

Thanks again for the feedback :)

I don't know this guy personally, as I am from Melbourne, but I have heard a lot of good things about him.

You will need to tell him what the valuation is for. If you are going to keep them and want them covered by insurance, the value is replacement value. If you wish to sell them, you will only be offered wholesale price, as obviously he needs to make money as a business.
Do a completed item listing search in ebay advanced search to give yourself an idea of what you might expect to sell them for on ebay. At least then you can decide if you are being offered a good price.
