After being intimidated by Ancients my whole life by the depth of knowledge required in this endeavor, I decided to dip my toe in the water and would like your help as I try to assemble a collection of ancients. My collecting philosophy, like that of many others, is to just collect what I like. What I like is limited by what I know, which isn't much. I just think about my history classes and lessons as I was growing up and seek out those people and places that I grew up learning about. I would appreciate any and all thoughts and advice as I assemble my collection. Started today with some popular basics.

LYDIAN KINGDOM. Alyattes or Walwet (ca. 610-546 BC). EL sixth-stater or hecte (10mm, 2.35 gm). NGC Choice VF 5/5 - 3/5 countermark. Uninscribed, Lydo-Milesian standard. Sardes mint. Head of lion right, mouth open, mane bristling, radiate globule above eye / Two square punches of different size, side by side, with irregular interior surfaces. Weidauer 76-8. Boston 1769.

I have been trying to track down a representative early Greek electrum coin at a reasonable price for quite some time.
You beat me to it! - I am somewhat envious.
Congratulations!

Awesome coin! I want to get a Greek electrum coin some day but if/when I do it probably wouldn't be anywhere near that big.

I wonder what's going on with the lines in front of the lion. At first glance they look like an inscription, but you're saying this is uninscribed so I don't know?

I agree with J1M. The coin is inscribed. Sometimes these are listed with variations of this: "WALWEL (in Lydian [only traces visible])". Here's one with a similar amount of the inscription showing:

Interesting that - apparently - the obverse die for these fractions was large enough to include confronted lion heads, but that they were struck to show only the left lion, and sometimes a bit of the inscription between the heads.
