I am not a collector so have no knowledge about sorting out coins
I recently aquired a box of coins from a deceased relative who was more of a saver of all things rather than a collector
One coin I would appreciate some help with is an 1859 Canadian penny which has some unusual linear striations , pits and holes diagonally across both sides of the coin. Not knowing anything about how coins are made I am unable to sort out whether this is a "birth defect" vs an aquired injury to the coin.I can't envision what sort of injury would result in pitting of the surface. just wondering if this is a defective vs a destroyed coin. any opinion would be appreciated

I don't see anything significant, maybe okie can comment to the large cents shape for you.

Are you saying that it is similar damage on both sides? Your coin was not born that way. Is the coin as green as it looks in the photos?

The coin has funny marks on both sides the side that does not have the head has more pitting
It is not as green as the photos make it appear it is more the colour of the pic number 4 which has the coloured upholstery cloth behind the coin

Has nothing to do with the minting process.
Just a badly corroded coin that is deteriorating.

I would say that acid or a heavy alkaline solution dripped on the coin and it run downhill with the coin not being all the way flat. Definitely post-mint and a pretty strong acid or alkaline substance. Copper is pretty reactive to some chemicals and the first drop or drops landed at about 7:00 on the Reverse.
