I noticed to today in the TRENDS section of Canadian Coin News that pre 1981 nickels are valued at a relatively high price. Does anyone know why this is?

Well, I don't think he can link up the trend listing in here..but he is right...they are averaging 30 cents for anything graded within a F to a MS60. Anything after that is face value.
I can't come up with a logical reason either than perhaps they were made with pure nickel?
Id love to find out the answer as well.

Yes they are 100% nickel. Metal hunters have been scarfing them up(myself included) every chance they get. Plus, the Canadian mint has been pulling them from circulcation and melting them via the ARP (alloy recovery program).

I could be wrong, but I see them getting scarce real soon because of this.

Wow, that's sort of exiting to hear. I guess that means that any key dates would become more collectible sooner.

I'm still finding about 20% of the nickels in a box are pre-1981. I guess I won't stop if the prices are heading in that direction.
