Rob, something just hit me, that may help explain the confusion. At the very beginning of your thread, you had a closeup, just below the full coin shots of the reverse and obverse. In the closeup, you have two white arrows. What do you think you are looking at, at the tips of those arrows?

So if I understand this correctly, the cent has a medal alignment clash that is off centered?

I was trying to help but my point was, the area you pointed out, that I referred to in my question, that was never answered, is the field, not the "beard", which I would almost guarantee, was what you thought it was. So anyway, maybe some food for thought in future finds with clashes.
