Plant a garden.

You don't need to rototill the backyard, just mark out some spots where you buried different items at different depths.

IMPORTANT: The reason for a garden as opposed to bench testing is that coins detect differently after they've been buried for awhile and have a chance to react with the soil. One year we buried two new rolls of cents and turned kids loose with a cheapie detector. They found 18 of them and a couple old coins on Memorial day.

We took the same detector, the same kids on Labor day, and they found about another 60 new cents in the same time period.

Might I also add:
1. Do research and talk to people. My friend I have permission to hunt near an Indian camp. The camp site is actually on an adjacent property and was also a burial site. I'm not in the least bit interested hunting a burial site, respect. I don't want my family's remains disturbed and I should treat anyone else's the same.
2. Get permission, even the strip of grass in front of a house between the sidewalk and the street. Some places it's public property and some places it's not. I live where it's not. We need to keep a good image as more and more places are being made off-limits.
3. Try to think like those of the time period where you're detecting. If it's a 20-30's home or farm house, they probably didn't trust banks. Mom probably hid her butter and egg money where she could see it from the kitchen. (clothes-line, dug well, etc). A framer might have had a "post-hole bank". They haven't invented a better burglar alarm than a chicken. Farmhands would set under a tree to take a break.
4. Research, get permission and think.
Your totals may go down but you are on your way to better finds.
