Hello everyone!

In another topic I mentioned that I wanted to collect a coin from each place in the Iberian Peninsula that minted coins. Motivated by people asking, I redid my list and made it neater to show you all! I opted to post it here in this subforum because it's essentially just ancient and medieval coins.

The most recent update was me breaking up the muslim taifas periods into the individual taifas. Before, I thought of getting a single one from each period and call it a day but lately I've been falling in love over and over again with islamic coins so I separated all the taifas and will collect one of each, individually.

Secondly, I re-researched the Catalan counties and they are a bit more that I had before. Here is the list:

Since I'm at this, I might as well ask for opinions! I have decided to not yet include the Catalan counties and viscounties on the french side, but I'm torn. Culturally they were Catalan, so maybe they should be included? In any case I will research that more thoroughly later and decide.

Some comments too: The hardest and most expensive area will definitely be the Suebi Kingdom. I've seen most coins from there go for more than 10k€. This is a lifelong project I guess, so maybe some day far out in the future I'll be able to afford that, but I'm not confident. As for the others, some are easy, some run for a few hundreds, and some Catalan counties and some taifas are likely a couple of thousands to, but that's more doable!

I hope some of you find this interesting! Now that I have reoganised this I am very intent on making this one of my actual main focuses on collecting, and going at it hard! I will never give up on getting more Portuguese coins though, so I'll alternate a bit, something along those lines!

For those who don't know here is some context as to why the Taifas and the Catalan counties are so numerous:

Taifas in 1131 (they kept changing all the time like true warring states!)

Catalan Counties - 9th century and 1200 respectively. Also some variation along the years.

That's a great set of maps for those of us (like me) who don't know the history of the region very well.

I collect "Poland" and needed to make the same kinds of decisions. Do I include Lithuania, since it was politically united with Poland from 1386-1795 and most coins of both places were issued under the title "King of Poland and Grand DUke of Lithuania"? (yes, since there were some reigns when very few were minted in Poland but lots were minted in Lithuania under the same king). Do I include places like Pomerania and Silesia which are in Poland today, but were culturally Germanic or Bohemian in the past, and politically were vassals of the Holy Roman Emperor, and not the King of Poland (only to the extent that I find some that I like and want to have in the collection!). This is like your point about places that are culturally different from Iberian/Catalan, but were ruled together in the middle ages.

In the end, it is YOUR collection, and YOUR rules, so you can apply them as flexibly as you wish!

That is an impressive system you have for your collection plans!

Well, maybe a mix of Catalan, Aquitaine, Provencal and Gallic culture ...

I collect French coins, I include feudal coins from Toulouse, Provence, Bearn, etc, also from the Aragonese period (not that I have that many, yet ). Include them in your Iberian collection if you like the coins from that period - there aren't that many types, but there is some originality in design. As @tdziemia points out: Your collection, your rules!
