So I was at the Superstore with my g/f. After we paid in cash, the cashier gave me my change. I noticed her handing me something odd on a Loonie... it was a Website Advertisement. It's a sticker in the shape of the actual coin Loon and neatly placed onto the coin.

Is this legal now!? haha!

I was jokingly saying that one day Pepsi will advertise on coins and it's a good idea for the country involved because it would reduce the price of mintage. haha! The mass majority hate pennies, what if these pennies were kept in circulation due to sponsorships from companies. :)

Under current Canadian law, it is probably not illegal. The only things deemed illegal have to do with melting down coinage or "defacing" it. The latter has as it's intent more to do with preventing coins from being clipped or gouged for their metal content more than anything else, so merely placing a sticker on it would not literally "deface" the coin.

It's almost surprising we haven't seen more of this. As in the link you posted, it gets attention for the company and isn't illegal. It may be some day though. I wonder if stickers on notes would be legal...

In the US it is fairly common to see dollar bills with an ink stamp on them telling you to visit a web site called something like wheresgeorge.com. Apparently, you can track where the bill has been. I'm guessing the website has lots of advertising once you get there.

We have the site Where's Willy here ... made by the same guy who made Where's George. Willy is in reference to Sir Wilfred Laurier on the Canadian $5 bill. I don't know if I've ever seen a bill with the stamp on it though.
Surprisingly there's not a lot of ads on the site...

Actually it doesn't. No more than this site does. Its a totally free website and it truly only has the objective of letting you track where your dollars go. I'm sure they make some money off of it, but its not really an advertisement.

Next time you get one of those dollars, you should go enter it and take a look at the site. Its pretty cool.

I found this one advertising a local "gentlemans" club about 10 years ago
