Received my submission from NGC today, one of the Owls wasn't placed properly in the holder before getting slabbed, the coin has become completely loose from the white plastic that holds it, there are now a lot of plays in the holder and when lightly shaking it makes noises too because the coin can now contact directly with the transparent part of the holder from inside. I find this to be extremely irritating, I fear that the holder can potentially damage the coin since it can't hold it tight. Not sure what to do. Anyone had similar experience?   |

NGC will most likely offer you a charge-free re-holder if you contact them.

Part of the problem is the irregular shape.
Coin holders are made for round coins so unless they can customize the holder somehow,
I'm not sure what else can be done.

It looks like they used the wrong size insert but I'm guessing they were also concerned about damaging the coin if they were to need to use force to encapsulate it. And yes, nice looking Owl! |

I certainly agree that it's a nice-looking coin, worthy of about any collection.
I'm interested in following this thread to hear comments on how irregular shaped coins are slabbed. In addition to ancients, there are many other series that have non-regular shapes; e.g., many of my earlier Indian coins.

Thank you guys, I've contacted NGC and am waiting for their response on this. I think as Jimmy mentioned the partial problem is the irregular shape, also these Owls tend to have uneven thicknesses around the edge, I know sometimes they have to reshape the plastic pliers a little bit so that they can hold the coin (as they did this time), I guess it's not always that easy to find a right sized insert that perfectly fit these Owls. I'm sure if you were to contact them they would replace it. Most ancient coin collectors will not slab their coins they much rather have them in trays or in envelopes, etc. These coins have been around more than 2000 years and have be handled ever since.
I prefer not to slab coins.

Was told by NGC today that they're going to offer a free re-holder service, so I think I will send it back, some extra cost on overseas postage is still better than keeping a rattling holder..
speaking of slabbing, I too have ancient coins that are not slabbed, and I completely understand why many collectors prefer not to slab them.
