Can anyone recommend a web site or reference to study the various mint mark locations and markers for some of the early S mint wheat cents. I see a lot of coins on the bay that look suspicious. Some with mint marks close to the date, others well below the date. I know to look for the infamous die chip marker on the reverse left wheat stalk but other than that I am at a loss. I'm looking to identify genuine examples of 1910 S to 1915 S. any guidance would be much appreciated.

Try Lincolncentresourse.com and see what they can help with. I am sure other sites can help also.

Thanks folks, I tried the link for Lincolncentersource.com and the site was hard to navigate and didn't provide any real information. I tried varietyvista and the info is limited there also. They only show mint mark positions for RPM's. At least from them I can get an idea of position for the 11s, 12s, 13s. They have nothing for the 10s,14s,and 15s though. Still searching.

The MM's were hand placed in those years, the positions vary a lot. Try just comparing to the PCGS completed listings and ha.com:

You will basically only find mintmark position listing for a few key date coins, or on coins that have had all their die varieties cataloged. Wheat cents ae typically just collected by date and mint, not by variety. So position listings for the 1909 SVDB and 14 D are known but not for the semi-keys.

Part of the reason is because there are most likely just too many die pairs to make it reasonable. At that time a average die life was somewhere around 250,000 coins per die So you 1910 S probably came from about 25 different obv dies. So look at that little area under the date and think about 25 different positions for the S, but all fairly close to the "normal" position. Now make a counterfeit die. The odds are the mintmark on your fake die is going to be in the same position as one of the genuine dies, or at least so close that it would take a really good overly to determine the position was off. It is most likely not something you are going to be able to eyeball.

Conder, Thanks for that information. It was just that I had notices some 1913s cents where some mintmarks were very close to the date while others were noticeably lower in comparison. After looking at several slabbed examples, I also noted both varieties. I guess the best I can hope for is to check the weights and look for things like casting bubbles, graininess, or otherwise mushy details.
