@TNG it's usually how I have my community tanks set up. One 55 gal had guppies a yr old rainbow shark, common pleco, mated pair of angels, 3 yearling pink convicts, who grew up in the tank. Along with guppies, platies, swords. I had plenty of hiding places. It had wood, plants and many rock formations! Moss is great for babies to hide in while growing up. It also contains food that fry can feed on until at least 10 days old. Floating plants are great for fry to hide in.
The one mistake I made was getting a self cloning crayfish!! In a year when I noticed fewer guppies and my jungle Val getting shorter, I dismantled my 55 gal. I was horrified to find 150 self cloning crayfish of all sizes!

. I moved them outside and local cats got a few. A couple went walk about. I was relieved when they passed to crayfish heaven, one night when the temperatures dropped suddenly. I also rarely keep a heater on., The exception is in weather gets -20 c or lower. As many tanks are in front of windows, so I can grow plants without special lights. I enjoy doing little experiments to see what will happen!
