Happy Holidays CCF I received many new coin albums as Christmas presents; one of them being Liberty Head Nickels. I also received a check, so I decided to use it to buy myself something nice to christen my new album. I found this coin on ebay, and by all measures to my eye it looks like a good example in a good grade. However, I am less familiar with these older nickels so I wanted to ask the experts to confirm it is not cleaned. Seller is asking $102 at the moment, which seems a little high to me for a raw coin in this grade. Really want to start this new set right, so let me know if y'all think it's a good buy or not.

No luster visible, a lot of rim dings, possible removed corrosion. I would pass and get a better coin. It looks like a low AU. Price too high.

I'll say EF details (rim damage).

The surfaces do not look natural to me, and I would definitely pass on this one. Be patient -- there are plenty to choose from and there is no rush.
If it is a new series for you, I suggest you first acquire some common-date examples with original surfaces to build some experience.

Thank you all for the feedback. To piggyback off the initial discussion of the surfaces, am I correct in that this coin is just a bit more washed out than an original one would be? The wear pattern does not seem like scrubbing to me, which would lead me to believe that it was possibly dipped in something? Let me know if I'm on the right track.

Honestly, while I cannot offer a definitive, the color is such that I just wouldn't trust it. It's at least had an acetone bath, which isn't necessarily fatal, but there's a good chance it will show wipe marks under the scope that would net it a "cleaned" detailing.
The rim damage is also significant enough to raise questions. It is really best to leave coins like this alone. There's no need to take such risks once you know what to look for.
To get started with the series, buy 1903-1912s somewhere around F/VF, then work your way up into higher-value material.

~EF40 sharpness, rim damage, environmental damage (porosity/pitting most notably on PLURIBUS and on obverse at date) Save your money, this coin has issues. Look for a problem-free example. $102 is a joke, I'd value it around 10-15% of that.
I do not think it was dipped.

My only unsolicited insight is your investment into a collectible coin. $102 puts you at PCGS/NGC MS63 on ebay. Why buy raw unknown potential problem coins? Buying certified and crack it out and pop it into the album would seem more prudent for the money you're willing to spend.

@dsfreeworld, think you might be looking at a "no cents", "with cents" would run $150+ in low MS.

this is maybe a $10 coin. I would not deal with anyone that was overcharging by that much.

Ty202, thank you sir I hadn't sent that detail I wasted so much money in my early days on raw problem coins and it pains me to see another go down that path
