Ok I have done a little bit of detecting with a cheap metal detector my dad has. I believe he got it from radio shack for under 100$. It has a little meter on it and says the different things its detecting (nickel,pop tab, bottle cap, nickel, zinc & copper, and then 1¢ 5¢ 10¢ 25¢ 50¢ are together in one section, etc) it has 2 knobs one for disc/ and something else I dont remember what exactly but its more for the bigger stuff than coins. and another for Frequency? I'm thinking its frequency but I'm not sure. it controlls signal so I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. but anyways. how would I know how to pinpoint where a coin is or how deep it is? I have only found one coin besides modern and it was a 1908 quarter  but it has been awhile since ive messed with it. I am plannin on going and pickin it up if I can figure out the basics. Hi Demonboy
We need to know the make of the detector,, on the older analog machines the ground balance had to be set by hand.
If you get the type and brand of the detector, its possible that the owners manual can be gotten online.

The bottom part could move by hand and I had to adjust it to make it as level as possible. I will find out in the next few days what the model is. I checked online several months ago but couldnt find it nowhere. I never could figure out much about how to pinpoint with it or to tell how deep it is. I'm kinda hopin for some all around basic metal detecting advice. ill let you know the model when I know.

Hi Chuck If you can take a picture of the meter,, Not all detectors have the capability of telling how deep the target is,, If the loop at the botton is a solid disc, pin pointing can be challenging, but not impossible,, if the loop is in fact a loop, then pin pointing becomes easier, but still takes much practice to become good at it ,,

i will take some pics as soon as I get it. as for now I will say that it is in fact a loop it is actually a loop in a loop if u know what I mean. I dont know if its the middle that dtects or the outer rim or what tho.

How old is the unit? Most older models didn't give a depth, you had to go by signal strength.

  its a radio shack Discovery 2000 the sticker on it says.... How do I know exactly where the object is under the loop? dead center or on the sides or what. 2. Do I have to go by how loud the signal is to know about how deep? 3. How do I work the settings to find coins and rings and other stuff? 4. what do the diff settings mean? disc, auto notch, the disc/notch knob etc. 5. Anything else you can help with  Thanks alot guys. I really appreciate it. i honestly dont know how old it is. it dont say but I know it is a few years old. |

one more question. I live in Huntington, West Virginia a pretty big city. I'm about 2 blocks from an elementary school and I'm completely surrounded by homes for college students at Marshall University and am very close to the school itself. Do you think id find very much in my yard? very much silver maybe? and how would I go about gettin the info about checking parks and school property? thanks again

Since I have never used a machine such as the picture I will need to do a little research to be able to answer the finer points of using the machine,,
To answer your other question ,, Yards can vary in what is found there, alot depends on the age and prior residents, Lots of Kids no Kids ETC,, If I was you I would start in my own yard !!!
as for local ordinances, perhaps the local police can answer your questions concerning access and restrictions on public ground in the area.

OK Ill check with the police and see what they know. You dont have to use your time to research my machine but if you do find something let me know. And theres kids everywhere around here that go through every yard so I think itll be a good place. Thanks

hey chuck it is the radio shack version made by bounty hunter it tells how deep the coins are in a aproxamate deepth it is not always right the ground balance is done by holding the machine at waist leval and turnning it onand it has auto trck for changeing ground conditions as in the minerals in the ground. if you push the notch button and turn the disk notch control to about the 9:30 position it will eliminate most of the pull tabs. if you have any other questions I have the manual for those machines I have the same one only made for Wal-mart |

the website for the machine is https://www.detecting.com and look at the one labled with the 202 or 2000 or the roman numeral 2 on them they are all the same detector |

as far as the detecting on the loop it detects on the outer loop and pinponts on the inner loop if that helps any let me know.

the depth indicator is the bottom led bar on the face of the machine the top one tells you what it is detecting

it is actually not that old and it has a 5 year limited warranty on it
