I recently purchased coins I can identify at auction but the lot came with many ancient coins. They are all identified on small sheets of paper but I know nothing. I am posting one and am asking if you can send me in the right direction for research. Also, how would I know if they are real or fake? Some of them appear coated, like the one posted, and others are not. Is this just a form of preservation?
Thank you very much.

In previous centuries (and sometimes even now) old coins were often lacquered to stop them oxidising.

To know whether it's fake or not, you need to learn what a real one looks like. Search for it in auction results here https://www.acsearch.info/

Yes, the wax coating is for preservation purposes, and it may have been applied after earlier treatment to mitigate bronze disease. FYI, the silphium plant, associated with Kyrene, is an interesting motif that appears on some ancient coins. The herb was greatly valued in antiquity, and is believed to be long extinct.
