Hi, I finally have the ambition to move my entire personal collection from the Lighthouse 'slider' type storage system album into the standardize 2 x 2's and album.
You may remember the slider type, the coin is put into 1 compartment within an entire strip of safe stiff material, and the entire strip is put into from what I am guess a soft PVC laced page.Typically 3 strips per page, and fits into a 4 ring type binder.
I know I should have known better, but I have been collecting for approx 4 years and have done really well, but I have been watching them and they have been safe. I see no PVC contamination (slime or clouding) what so ever, as I have been making sure the coins never shifted within their compartments and came in contact with the outer page, and the album has been stored in an upright position.
My question is, if I see no sign of PVC contamination what so ever (the coin is as shiny and brilliant as they day I got it), then does it still warrant some type of acetone bath or rub? Is there something hidden I can't see?
If I ever come across a circulated coin that is in better shape than the example I presently have, should I always give it a going over with the acetone? Could there could be finger print oils on there I am not be able to see?
Finally, the application of the acetone. What is preferred. A complete bath, or a q-tip method where the q-tip is rolled back and forth over the effected area.
A long winded message here, but I didn't know how else to explain the entire facts.
Thank you for any advise.
Martin
