1974 Defective Planchet Quarter - Coin Community Forum

12319558 Valued Member United States 123 Posts	Posted 01/31/2022 08:28 am Found this in some loose change, and I thought it might be a Cud at first. But, the rim has actually broken off, and some coins with Cud errors still have the whole rim intact. The rim has broken off on the 1 in 1974. The States on the reverse of the coin has basically faded off of the coin. Also, the R in Liberty is fading away on the obverse, and the DO in dollar on the reverse of the coin. I am almost certain this is not PMD. What are your thoughts on this? * Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. * Report this Post to the Staff

Shame about the condition, but I would personally keep it just because it's cool, a legit error, and only costs face value. You'll notice that the strike is weak on the rim directly opposite the clip. That's called the Blakesley effect, and it's a good way of identifying genuine clipped planchet. Not all genuine clips will show the blakesley effect, but if a coin does show it, it likely is genuine. Edited by SamCoin 01/31/2022 09:41 am Report this Post to the Staff
