Of course, any disturbance in the original surface, such as hairlines, would be visible on any coin of any metal.
A big difference is the coloring of the coin. Silver tones easily and vividly, so any removal of the toning would be obvious. Gold doesn't tone like silver does so it may be difficult to detect that way.
