I play with databases for a living, so I'm inclined to use Access the way other office workers are inclined to use Excel. Has some flexibility in terms of creating data entry forms, etc. For example, I can have a screen to enter new purchases. Once I tell it that I've added a U.S. $0.01 from 1907, it will automatically fill in that it's an Indian Head cent, and the other side of the screen will bring up the grading standards for them. On the main screen, I can choose the type of coin I'm interested in, and depending on which button I click, I can look at my total inventory of the type, the inventory in a particular location (Dansco, Whitman 1, Binder A, safe deposit box, whatever). I can also run a report that will show me all of the year/mintmark combinations for a given type, a condition/price grid, and also tell me the best example of each type that I currently have, so I can scan down and see if there are any holes or weak points in the collection, and the approximate amount I'd have to pay for those coins. Just wondering if anybody else had written their own coin database, or wanted to share ideas on it. Cheers,

Not yet, but I'm considering it. I like the plethora of ways in which you can manipulate the data and pull up reports. I'll probably have a new learning curve, it's been ten years since I was extensively using Access. I never had any associated pictures, can they be included or only the location? Gads, I feel so horse and buggy. I remember reel-to-reel data tapes from when I was in the Navy.... many yaruns ago. My old ship is now on the bottom of the ocean.

I do. Used it to teach myself some basic MS Access techniques. Of course, it's a work-in-progress. Here's my input screen:

I like that! Is it possible to get Access to convert an Excel spreadsheet into individual records in Access like that?

Sure. Excel "databases" can be easily brought into an Access table. From there, you'd create a form that arranges the data fields. The form wizard does most of the work. If you're interested, I can send you my database as a sample.

I used to use a dBase-compatible coin database; when that program stopped working (it wasn't XP-compatible) I switched to another; this one (PrimaSoft Coin Organizer Deluxe) uses it's own file format but it can export the data as text, dBase, HTML and a couple of other formats.

This was on a Commodore 64, just to give you a time reference. I gave up on it as I did not see any value add over my trusty spreadsheet; of course, adding pictures to that database (at least at that time) was not an option.

I have started playing with it a little. How do you insert a photo into a field?

It's very easy... since Excel and Access are both part of the MS Office suite, they've got a lot of compatibility built in, including "wizards" to import Excel data into Access. Quote: I have started playing with it a little. How do you insert a photo into a field? Access (at least 97, the version I'm using) considers images to be "OLE Objects"... that's what you'll need to set it up as. MArainman, I'd be interested to see your db as well, if you don't mind sharing... my Yahoo.com email username is "inanno" :) I'm most of the way through normalizing all the non-gold U.S. price guides currently on numismedia, if anybody needs that table...

OK. So I've got a ZIP file to post with my DB in it. It's about 110kb. Anybody have any ideas on how to post it here for everyone to get at?
I've already tried getting it below 90kb and renaming it JPG. Can't get it small enough.
